Overwatch Lead Director Jeff Kaplan has confirmed the arrival of the next map via the most recent Developer Diary, and we’ll be flying all the way to the moon. Horizon Lunar Colony will already be familiar to fans of the series who have seen the animated short ‘Recall’ as the original home of Winston, the anthropomorphic intelligent gorilla scientist who played a pivotal role in getting the band back together. It’s already up on the PTR, and is an Assault map (similarly to Anubis or Volskaya). There was at one point an idea to make the whole map zero gravity, but instead that has been limited to certain areas. To celebrate the release, there will be a limited window for a 0G mode across all of Overwatch’s maps in Arcade mode.
There should also a lot of contribution to the background and story of Overwatch, especially when it comes to Winston and his namesake friend Dr Harold Winston. Little is known about what happened to the Lunar Colony, but we are sure that at some point the animal test subjects, of which Winston was one, fought back against the scientists, and Winston hasn’t returned since. That being said there’s likely to be some interesting ambient and contextual storytelling in the map, especially if you choose to play as Winston. We’re also expecting a new hero to be released in the next month or two as Blizzard moves into year 2 of Overwatch support.
